CASE REPORT - FEMALE, 81 YEARS OLD, CHRONIC LEG ULCERS

81-year-old woman with chronic ulcers on the right lower leg since 2004 and a new ulcer on the left lower leg since 11/2008. Patient has allergy to many analgesics and antibiotics that is disadvantageous as it narrows the choice of both per oral and injection analgesic preparations. The patient has been treated with many wound dressings with only temporary effect when changing the type of the dressing. There has been no change in the pain intensity. There were three ulcers on the inner and outer ankles and on the dorsum of the right foot. We have used disinfectant baths in Betadine solution followed by an application of Traumastem biodress. The patient most appreciated a significant pain relief that enabled her to sleep in the night. Another positive factor was radical and particularly rapid cleaning of all ulcers during several days. Secretion was not so intensive, so the maceration of the surrounding skin was minimal. After a fortnight of Traumastem biodress application, with the frequency of re-dressing at first once a day, and every other day in the second week, the ulcers cleaned and the blood circulation improved. The granulation of the ulcers has now got “started”. The patient is satisfied with the decreased frequency of pain that enables her to sleep in the night. She herself considers the healing of her ulcers as good. It can be predicted that two out of four ulcers could heal in close future – the ulcers on the dorsum of the foot and above the outer ankle of the right lower leg. The ulcer above the inner ankle has decreased in size to about two thirds. The ulcer above the inner ankle of the left foot measures 7.5×4 cm and is only partially cleaned but solitary islets of granulation tissue can be seen. Traumastem biodress dressing belongs to the wound dressing materials that considerably improve the status of chronic wounds thus helping patients to improve their quality of life. Another advantage is the reimbursement by the health insurance companies and possibility to prescribe the material by general practitioner.
